I could write a lot about this-- a perfect embodiment of 2nd half of the 19th century obsession with with scientific discovery and nature (especially capturing it in and bringing it inside)

To my eye it is a beautiful thing formally

with very very minimal spotting/wear to the photos and no damage to the hand-carved frame

I think quite possible these were made in England for an American audience, where Jackstraws seems to have been the more common name.
