The hilt is composed of multiple thin leather washers

however it has suffered extensive rust exposure

which almost certainly would have killed someone had they been wearing it

Recently purchased at an military auction, this is an excellent condition WWII production black finished leather softshell holster for the standard issue Walther P 38 pistol in 9mm. It is nicely maker marked and dated on the back with gxy 1944. This indicates 1943 production by Gebrder Klinge of Dresden Lbtau, a known holster producer during the war according to GERMAN MILITARY LETTER CODES 1939 1945 by John Walter.
