I realized that what the metallic embroidery in gold and silver reminds me most of is a 19th c

which I purchased from a seller who knew nothing about it

works great--just squeeze the bottom ends of the wooden sticks to which he is attached

What I've learned is that "dissected maps" (lithography maps mounted to wood and cut into pieces) were one of the earliest types of educational tools for children, used in early kindergarten, and among the first iterations of the jig saw
