Constructed of gilded zinc, the obverse consists of an oval laurel leaf wreath, joined together at the bottom by ribbon, topped by a Kriegsmarine eagle clutching a mobile swastika, overlaid by a U Boat set against a hollow background. The reverse has a crimped hinge and horizontal pinback meeting a round wire catch. It is maker marked with the logo of Friedrich Orth, Vienna, measuring 48. 7mm (w) x 39. 7 mm (h), weighing 18.
