Vatican, Papal State. An Order of Pope Pius IX, III Class Commander in Gold visually-hidden 4th Class - by Austrian(Ordine di Pio IX). Instituted June 17th, 1847. In Gold, a blue enamel star with rays in each quadrant, the obverse medallion features PIVS IX surrounded by a ring inscribed VIRTVTI ET MERITO, the reverse medallion presents a white disc with inscription ANNO MDCCCXLVII, measures 54. 8 mm (w) x 58. 8 mm (h inclusive of integral ring), weighs 27. 1 grams, marked with an eagle's head on the ring denoting Gold composition and french manufacture, chips to
